Independence HouseIndependence House is a 25-storey modernist building in Lagos, Nigeria. It was completed in 1961 just after Nigeria gained independence from the British, marking the end of the colonial era. It became the first federal secretariat, housing several ministries when Lagos Island served as both state and federal capital. Under Babangida it housed the Ministry of Defence, but fell into disrepair and was eventually abandoned. In 2019 the Lagos Biennial was housed on the first and second floors. I had the opportunity of photographing the abandoned 23 floors and roof above. |
