About the show:

As an architect and sculptor, Gaelen Pinnock uses two-dimensional representation to develop and describe ideas that may be created in a three-dimensional world. As an artist, he works the other way around, often distilling three-dimensional reality into two dimensions, but luring a viewer into reading the third dimension.

To be accurately described and communicated, the X, Y and Z axes – the fidelity of Cartesian space – must hold true for space and form. But every paradigm begs questioning. Our perception relies on an intrinsic trust in Cartesian accuracy, even when it’s not there.

The works in this exhibition distort or unravel the base matrix. They tease the viewer’s perception of space and form. Is it flat? Does it take up space? The only way to tell is to shift your position, to look again, to scrutinise.

Pinnock aims for that moment when it all comes together and dissolves at the same time, where the discontinuity can create delight, curiosity and perhaps a questioning of our powers of perception.

I haven't prioritised social media over the last f

I haven't prioritised social media over the last few years... ever actually. Sometimes people ask if I make work anymore... if it doesn't exist on Instagram does it exist at all!?

So, due to popular demand, some new posts of now not so recent work!

“Right of Admission Reserved” formed part of an exhibition called “The Main Complaint” that showed at the Zeitz MOCAA from Nov 2018 to Feb 2019. The installation I created was a physical barrier at the entrance of the exhibition space. The work was an attempt to distil the sense of exclusion that so many South Africans feel while navigating securitised landscapes. It transformed the uneasy, disquieting sense imparted by less overt expressions of power, control or authoritarianism in the built environment, into something physical and explicit…. in a space where the leisured classes are accustomed to ease of access.

Museum-goers who wanted access to the exhibiton area had to press a button that rang a bell to request access. There was an automated delay with the sounds of someone fumbling with an intercom system. After this the gate lock opened and people could enter. All the while there was audio playing of sounds typical of Cape Town suburbs: barking dogs, passing cars, alarms and the sounds of labour: gardeners digging and builders hammering.

I recently completed an intervention for the Lagos

I recently completed an intervention for the LagosPhoto Festival in Nigeria. “Something to Declare” is a large sculpture that inhabits a space under Falomo bridge, linking Ikoyi and Victoria Island. For the festival, numerous artists have interpreted this years theme, "passports" by looking at a diverse range of subjects such as migration, heritage, identity, belonging etc. I've drawn on my work investigating the embodiment of various kinds of power in built and urban form, to create an intimidating structure. The work echoes recent isolationist tendencies of nation states and the bureaucracy and alienation associated with this. The sculpture envelops a mythical, fragile core, much like the constructed identities at the heart of the nation state. Made from a few hundred meters of bamboo, a local Nigerian construction material, the work has an imposing presence in the busy intersection.
